Add Page Numbers to PDF

100% private — runs on your device, never uploaded. Works offline once loaded.

Add page numbers to the bottom or top of every page in a PDF — perfect for reports, scans and handouts. Everything runs locally in your browser.

What page numbering actually changes in the file

This tool doesn't rasterize or reprint your PDF — it opens the existing page tree and draws a small text object into the content stream of each page, positioned by coordinates you control (top or bottom, left, center or right margin). Because PDFs describe every page as an independent set of drawing instructions, adding a number to page 12 has zero effect on the layout or fonts already on that page; it's purely additive.

The numbering itself is just a counter that starts at whatever value you set and increments by one per page, using the font size you choose. That's why you can make a 40-page appendix start at 'A-1' logically continue a 200-page main report — set the start number to 201 and the appendix reads as a continuation instead of resetting to 1.

Where this actually gets used

Court filings, dissertations and government tenders routinely require every page to carry a printed page number, and reviewers will reject a submission that doesn't. Scanned documents are the other common case — a scanner dumps 80 loose pages into one PDF with nothing to tell a reader 'page 34 of 80', which becomes a real problem the moment someone prints it and the stack gets shuffled.

It's also useful for merged PDFs: if you've combined a cover letter, a resume and three reference letters into one file, sequential numbers make it obvious nothing is missing when someone flips through a printout.

Formatting choices that matter

Position and font size are more than cosmetic — a number placed in the bottom-right corner of a landscape-oriented page can land outside the printable margin on some printers, so if your document mixes portrait and landscape pages, preview a landscape page after processing.

Numbers are added as plain text, not as a form field, so they become a permanent part of the page content and will show up identically whether the PDF is opened in Adobe Reader, Preview, or printed directly — there's no dependency on the viewer supporting interactive elements.

A quick tip

Two small habits save rework: number the file after any splitting or page-removal is done so a cover page never ends up in the sequence, and always test settings on a 2-3 page copy first if you're unsure how a font size will sit on a dense, small-margin layout.

  • Number the file after splitting out a cover page you don't want included in the count.
  • Test on a short copy of the PDF first if you're unsure about font size on a dense layout.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No — page numbers are added on your device and your files stay private.

Can I start numbering from a specific page?

Yes — set the starting number (e.g. start at 5 for the first page).

Will page numbering distort or resize my existing page content?

No. The number is drawn as a new, separate text element in an empty margin area; nothing already on the page is moved, scaled or reflowed.

Can I start numbering from a page other than 1?

Yes — set the starting number field to any value, for example 5, and the first page in the file will be labeled 5, the second 6, and so on.

What if my PDF has mixed page sizes or orientations?

Each page is numbered relative to its own dimensions, so a landscape page and a portrait page in the same file will both get a correctly placed number rather than one being pushed off the edge.

Does this work on scanned (image-only) PDFs?

Yes — since the number is added as a new text layer independent of the page content, it works the same way on a scanned image page as it does on a text-based PDF.

Can I remove or change page numbers afterward?

Once written into the page content, the numbers become part of the page just like any other text; to change them, run the numbered file back through with new settings, or start over from the original unnumbered file if you kept a copy.

Is there a page limit?

No artificial limit is imposed — very large PDFs (many hundreds of pages) simply take longer to process since your device is doing the work rather than a remote server queue.
