A bare .aac file is the awkward one. The codec itself is everywhere — inside M4A files, inside MP4 video, in digital radio — but a raw AAC stream with no container confuses a surprising amount of software, including some car stereos, older players and upload forms that check the extension rather than the contents. MP3 has none of those problems. Since AAC is already lossy, this is a lossy-to-lossy conversion and costs one generation; 192 kbps or higher keeps that inaudible for music, while speech is fine at 96 or 128.
