Work out your weighted grade point average by adding each course's letter grade and credit hours. The tool maps letter grades to the standard 4.0 scale and shows your GPA and total credits instantly — all in your browser.
How weighted GPA is calculated
Your GPA is a credit-weighted average of grade points, not a simple average of your grades. Each letter grade converts to a value on the 4.0 scale, that value is multiplied by the course's credit hours to give "quality points", and the calculator divides the sum of all quality points by the sum of all credit hours.
In formula terms: GPA = Σ(grade point × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours). A 4-credit A- therefore pulls your average far more than a 1-credit A-, which is exactly why heavier courses matter more to your transcript. The tool shows the running total of quality points and credits so you can see the maths behind the number.
The 4.0 grade-point scale
This calculator uses the most common US letter-to-point mapping. Some schools treat A and A+ identically at 4.0, while others award 4.3 for an A+ — check your registrar if precision matters.
- A+ / A = 4.0, A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7
- F = 0.0
Tips for an accurate result
Enter credit hours exactly as they appear on your syllabus or transcript — a lab or seminar is often worth fewer credits than a lecture, and getting this wrong skews the weighting. Leave out pass/fail and audited courses, since they usually don't carry grade points and would distort the average.
To project a future GPA, add rows for courses you're still taking with your expected grades. To model a target, experiment with different letter grades and watch how the weighted number responds — heavier courses move it fastest.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA averages grade points equally regardless of course size. A weighted GPA (what this tool computes) multiplies each grade by its credit hours, so bigger courses count more toward the final number.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA across semesters?
Enter every graded course from all semesters into the calculator at once. Because GPA is credit-weighted, listing all courses together gives the correct cumulative figure — you cannot simply average per-semester GPAs unless every semester had identical credits.
Should I include pass/fail courses?
Usually no. Pass/fail, credit/no-credit and audited courses typically don't earn grade points at most institutions, so leaving them out keeps your GPA accurate. Check your school's policy if unsure.
Does an A+ count as more than an A?
On the scale used here, A+ and A both equal 4.0. A minority of schools cap the scale at 4.0 while others award 4.3 for an A+, which can nudge a high GPA slightly higher.
Can I use this for high school GPA?
Yes for an unweighted 4.0-scale GPA. Many high schools add bonus points for honors, AP or IB classes (a weighted 5.0 scale); this tool uses the standard 4.0 mapping and does not add those bonuses automatically.
Is anything I enter saved or uploaded?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, so your course names, grades and credits never leave your device and nothing is stored after you close the page.
