The model behind it
Translations are produced by Meta's NLLB-200 (No Language Left Behind), specifically the distilled 600M-parameter variant packaged for the web by Xenova. It is a sequence-to-sequence model trained on 200 languages, and it runs through transformers.js using a quantized build so it fits and executes in a normal browser tab.
The first time you translate, the model is downloaded once and cached. This is a large one-time download, but after that translations happen offline and privately.
Good uses
It is well suited to short-to-medium passages: emails, product descriptions, social posts, study notes, chat messages and travel phrases.
Translate one block of text at a time for the best results, and switch the From and To selectors to move in either direction between any of the supported languages.
On-device quality and caveats
A 600M distilled model is compact, so it will not always match the largest cloud translators on rare idioms, long documents or highly technical jargon. Treat the output as a strong first draft and review important text before publishing.
Very long inputs may be truncated or slow on low-powered devices, and unusual proper nouns or slang can be translated literally. For anything legal, medical or contractual, have a fluent human verify the result.
