Crop is the one edit you cannot do with a setting on your phone: removing part of the picture, not shrinking it. Drag a box on the video to keep what matters — a whiteboard, a face, a game window — and drop the black bars, the empty desk or the bystander at the edge of frame. Because the crop changes the shape, this is also how a landscape clip becomes a square or vertical post without the picture being squashed. Everything runs in your browser; the footage is never uploaded.
Crop, resize and aspect ratio are three different things
- Cropping removes part of the picture. The subject stays the same size; you simply keep less of the frame.
- Resizing keeps the whole picture and changes how many pixels describe it. Nothing is cut away.
- Changing the aspect ratio without cropping stretches or squashes faces, which is always the wrong answer. Crop to the new shape instead.
Cropping landscape footage for a vertical feed
A 16:9 clip posted to a 9:16 feed either gets black bars or gets cropped — and if you do not crop it deliberately, the platform will crop it for you, usually straight down the middle and rarely where the subject is. Draw the box yourself over the part that matters and you control what survives.
Expect to lose a lot: taking 9:16 out of 16:9 keeps under a third of the width. If the subject moves across frame during the clip, a single fixed crop cannot follow them — cut the clip into sections and crop each separately.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the crop dimensions rounded to even numbers?
H.264 stores colour at half resolution, so it cannot encode an odd width or height. The crop is nudged by a pixel where needed.
Can I crop and keep the same file size?
It will usually be smaller, since there are fewer pixels to encode at the same quality.
